Author's Verdict: Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh?

As someone who has spent years travelling across Northeast India with a camera in hand, I’ve realized that the Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh debate cannot be settled by simply counting waterfalls or mountains. Both states are breathtaking, but they offer completely different kinds of journeys.

If I had to answer based on experience rather than brochures, my recommendation would depend on one thing—how much time you have.

Meghalaya Wins Hearts, Arunachal Wins Souls

There’s no denying that Shillong and the rest of Meghalaya have become tourism favorites in recent years. From Dawki’s crystal-clear river to Cherrapunji’s waterfalls, the state has rightly earned global attention.

But Arunachal Pradesh still feels like a map with unfinished pages.

Even today, places like Mago, Chuna Valley, and the breathtaking Gongkar La Lake have only recently entered the tourism spotlight. And that’s what fascinates me the most—there are still valleys, villages, and mountain roads waiting to be discovered.

Sometimes it feels as if only the mountains know what they’re hiding.

That said, Meghalaya has its own secrets too. If you’re someone who lives for dramatic landscapes, hidden waterfalls, and chasing the perfect frame after sunrise, Meghalaya will never disappoint.

Your Travel Duration Changes Everything

This is probably the biggest deciding factor when choosing Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh.

If You Have Only 1–3 Days

Choose Meghalaya without hesitation.

The roads are shorter, attractions are closer together, and you can comfortably experience Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and nearby viewpoints within a few days.

If You Have a Week or More

That’s when Arunachal Pradesh begins to reveal its magic.

The distances here are enormous. Every destination feels like a journey of its own.

  • Dirang

  • Mandala

  • Tawang

  • Mechuka

  • Anini

  • Dong Valley

These destinations are scattered across different corners of the state, and reaching them takes patience.

But that’s exactly why they remain unforgettable.

If You're a Biker, Arunachal Is Pure Therapy

If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, I don’t think there’s a stronger answer in the Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh debate.

Arunachal wins.

Riding towards Sela Pass, descending into Mechuka, or navigating the winding roads towards Anini feels less like a road trip and more like a lifelong dream unfolding kilometre by kilometre.

The mountains change constantly.

The prayer flags flutter beside frozen lakes.

Small villages appear unexpectedly.

And before you realize it, you’ve fallen in love with the roads, the culture, and the people.

If You're a Photographer, Arunachal Offers Endless Stories

As a photographer, I find Arunachal incredibly rewarding because every elevation creates a new ecosystem.

One morning you could be photographing misty Himalayan landscapes.

The next, you’re tracking rare birds.

Some of my favorite photography destinations include:

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary

A paradise for birdwatchers, Eaglenest is famous worldwide for its extraordinary bird diversity, including rare species like Bugun Liocichla, one of India’s most celebrated bird discoveries.

Mishmi Hills

The Mishmi landscape is known for its rich biodiversity and supports remarkable Himalayan wildlife across dense mountain forests.

Sangti Valley

During winter, Sangti becomes one of Arunachal’s most magical locations.

The arrival of the Black-necked Crane, a bird deeply revered in Buddhist culture, transforms the valley into a dream destination for wildlife photographers.

For anyone carrying a camera, these places are far more than photography spots—they’re experiences that stay with you long after the trip ends.

Roads: Better Than Most People Expect

One thing that surprises first-time travelers is the quality of Arunachal’s roads.

Many of its major highways—especially the route towards Tawang—are maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which keeps several strategic mountain roads in remarkably good condition despite challenging terrain.

That doesn’t mean the journey is always easy.

During the monsoon season, landslides can occasionally interrupt travel, especially in higher-altitude regions.

Meghalaya, meanwhile, also offers excellent road connectivity.

In fact, if you’re travelling during heavy monsoon months, Meghalaya generally feels like the safer and more predictable option because travel distances are shorter and routes are less exposed to high-altitude weather.

Communication Is Surprisingly Easier in Arunachal

This is something many travel guides rarely mention.

In remote parts of Meghalaya, especially outside major tourist areas, communication can sometimes become challenging because many locals primarily speak Khasi, Garo, or Jaintia languages.

Arunachal surprised me in the opposite way.

Despite its incredible tribal diversity, Hindi is widely spoken across many communities, making conversations with local people much easier for most Indian travelers.

Sometimes a simple conversation becomes one of the best memories of the trip.

Don’t Forget the Inner Line Permit

Another practical difference between Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh is entry requirements.

Meghalaya
  • No Inner Line Permit is required for most Indian tourists.

Arunachal Pradesh
  • Indian travelers must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) before entering the state.

Fortunately, the permit process is straightforward and can be completed online before your trip.

My Final Verdict: Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh?

After exploring both states, my answer is surprisingly simple.

Choose Meghalaya if:
  • You have 1–3 days.

  • You want waterfalls, caves, and easy road trips.

  • You’re travelling with family or first-time Northeast visitors.

  • You prefer shorter travel distances.

Choose Arunachal Pradesh if:
  • You have 5–10 days or more.

  • You love mountains and long road journeys.

  • You’re a biker chasing unforgettable roads.

  • You’re a photographer searching for rare landscapes and wildlife.

  • You want destinations that still feel untouched.

If someone asked me where I’d spend an entire week without looking at the calendar, I’d choose Arunachal Pradesh.

But if someone gave me only a weekend to experience the magic of Northeast India, I’d send them to Meghalaya without thinking twice.

Some journeys are about reaching the destination.

Others are about discovering roads that don’t appear on every traveler’s map.

And that’s exactly why Meghalaya wins the short escape, while Arunachal Pradesh owns the longer adventure.
